Kiran wins, Padmini suffers defeat in World Junior Chess

India and Orissa Woman International Master (WIM) Kiran Manisha Mohanty started her campaign on a winning note, defeating G Susana Carolina Ferreira (Portugan) in the World Junior (u-20) Girls Chess Championship, which commenced at Puerto Madryn in Argentina today. But Kiran’s statemate Padmini Rout, also a WIM, lost her opening round duel against Camila Colombo (Uruguay). In the second round, former Women’s National ‘B’ champion Krinan will meet fellow Indian Soumay Swaminathan and Asian junior champion Padmini will take on Natasa Bucar (Slovenia) tomorrow. Altogether 45 girls from 31 countries, including a maximum of five from India, are competing in the championship, which would conclude on November 4.
